I am the co-founder of Hands of Compassion (https://handsofcompassionsa.org/), its various programmes, and the Rhema Recovery Programme. I have witnessed hundreds of people recovering from substance abuse, leaving behind their addiction chapter, building careers, futures, families, and a new circle of friends that help them succeed.
There is a difference between rehab (a 2 to 4-week programme where medical doctors assist you to stop using substances) and recovery. Recovery is a longer process whereby you learn to live your daily life free from substance, develop skillsets to cope with frustrations, aggravations, daily routine, and boredom, and give yourself time to mature emotionally, grow spiritually, and develop healthy relationships.
I strongly recommend a live-in programme of at least six months. If you think this is too long let me ask you: have you been abusing substances for only 6 months? I encourage you to invest in yourself. There are no quick fixes.
My Road to Recovery
I have developed the “My Road to Recovery” resource, based on the 12 Steps, and am happy to share the trainer manual and participant booklet. It is purposefully created in a simple and easy-to-access format. The activities are light, quick, and fun; they offer a first step to introspection, reflection and new conversations.
I strongly encourage churches, organizations and communities to rally around those struggling with substance abuse, with support and care.
